We are impatient, shortsighted people, though, aren’t we? God may be telling a great story of redemption with our problems and pains, but very often He doesn’t tell it quickly enough to satisfy us. We are sitcom people serving the God of epic novels. While we are day in day out concerned about relief, God sees through infinite eyes in the scope of eternity. The hurts of our lives, the lingering darkness we cannot see beyond, He may see as mere shadows in the otherwise brilliant eternal portrait He is painting of His dominion over our lives. We typically see this portrait, albeit in a limited way, after we’ve passed through the redemptive journey. Imagine hacking your way through a dismal valley, then the next day you view it from a scenic overlook and realize how beautiful it is. But the key to experiencing the sustaining power of Jesus the Redeemer in our lives is experiencing Him by trusting Him precisely in those long valley crossings.

False inadequacy, exaggerated imperfections, and needless guilt.

The torments of a perfectionist.

Paradigm 3: Mentoring the Foundation of Leadership

Status – Titles and positions that we hold

Stature – Our credibility (how others view us), and our confidence (how we view ourselves)

Substance – When we cultivate emotional stability, restedness, security and humility (how God views us)

It is the substance of a leader that ultimately defines a leader.

The true expression of substance in leadership– inner security, when we can be small yet secure.

“Ultimately, God is more interested in what we have become rather than merely what we have accomplished for Him.”

-Mentoring Paradigms, Edmund Chan

John 15:18 – “If the world hates you, remember that it hated me first.”

When the world ridicules me for believing in You, Lord, I will remember that it ridiculed You first; I will remember that it persecuted You first; I will remember that it hated You first.

Matthew 10:22 – “You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”

In the Name of Jesus Christ, I reject all lies from the devil, I reject all feelings of accusation, I refuse to be weighed down by slander and deceit. I am protected under the shield of Your precious blood. Amen.

God has created logical, loving limits for us. Think of a river. Rivers are beautiful. You can sit on the banks of a river and picnic or read a book. You can go boating on a river or photograph it. Now a river has banks, but we don’t see people out with placards saying “Free the river” or “Every river has the right to flow wherever it wants” or “Down with riverbanks”. When a river flows within its banks, it brings harmony and order, tranquillity and peace. If the banks are taken away, the river will flood. When a river floods, we suddenly see that the reason for the banks was not to restrict the river at all but to give it limits. The banks make the river beautiful and useful. Without them, the river becomes a destructive and raging force. The same is true of sexuality. God made it to have banks and to travel within a channel. When we flow within those banks, our sexuality is peaceful, useful, and fulfilling. When we flow outside those banks, we bring destruction and havoc on ourselves and many other people around us.

An excerpt from my journal dated 5 May 2012, Saturday, 1.04 a.m.:

I don’t like challenge. I keep my world in a perfect little box, in a comfortable little place, and I settle in and live happily in it. But now, my perfect little box has been shaken and shattered. I’m forced to rethink my beliefs and practices.

I realized that all this while I have been putting my trust in the church instead of in God and His Word. I trust what I am being taught without thinking much about it because I assume that they should be right. It’s a dangerous situation to be in. And a very wrong attitude as well.

I feel like I’m living on fresh soil. I feel vulnerable. Everything feels new and foreign. But one thing I know that has not changed- God. It’s good to be challenged constantly, even though it makes me uncomfortable.
